Arris: The Future of Manufacturing is Here
They don’t make products like they used to… nor should they.Innovations in manufacturing technology are reimagining how products are made and how they perform, while also reducing their harmful effects on the environment.Arris is leading this new era with its proprietary Additive Molding™ manufacturing process, in which advanced carbon fiber materials stronger and lighter than metal are produced with the same efficiency and design freedom as plastic-molded products. Additionally, Arris developed a novel Specific Design method and software which designs with the end in mind for optimal performance, reduced waste, and maximum recyclability.
Arris has recently partnered with drone maker Skydio to revolutionize drone design and performance. Using its Additive Molding technology, Arris designed an advanced airfame (pictured above) that allowed Skydio to replace a 17-part assembly with a single, multi-functional structure. Further, the lighter structure enabled the Skydio X2 to increase range and speed. The Skydio X2 drone recently received a “Best of Innovation Award” at CES 2021."One of the things that we’re really excited about is the partnership with Arris Composites. I think that’s an example of a company that has figured out an incredibly cool and innovative way of applying 3D-printing style technology, along with conventional molding work, to get incredible results. And the component that we’re using from them is an integral part of the airframe, but we’re also very excited about what we can do with that partnership going forward. We see all sorts of possibilities for using these parts that have impossible geometry and incredible material properties to make our products lighter and stiffer, and higher performance." – Adam Bry, CEO, Skydio
Arris also recently demonstrated how its technology can be used in the aerospace industry. Arris created a T-bracket (pictured above) for airplanes made from continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites that offers up to an 80 percent reduction in weight, while retaining similar strength and stiffness. With thousands of similar structures used in commercial aircraft, the estimated weight savings is at least 1 percent per plane, translating to global annual reductions of more than 1 billion gallons of jet fuel and 7 million tons of CO2 emissions.
The future is bright as Arris offers a cost-effective, new manufacturing path forward not only for aerospace, but for consumer electronics, sporting goods, automotive, and other industries. Arris has won several awards including a 2021 Big Innovation award and a Red Dot: Design Concept 2020 award, the largest professional design concept competition in the world. And there’s one more thing:On Earth Day, April 22, 2021, Arris will unveil a groundbreaking new technology that will further reduce manufacturing’s wasteful imprint on the Earth. No spoilers here, but it will definitely be a game-changer. So stay tuned…
