“Silicon Valley” Hits Close to Home

By Katelynn DegnanHave you seen Silicon Valley yet? The new HBO comedy series from Mike Judge, responsible for the cult classic Office Space and cartoons Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill, takes a satirical (yet somewhat realistic) look at life in the capital of the tech world. Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69V__a49xtwSilicon Valley follows the lives of young entrepreneurs on the road to fulfilling their dreams of becoming the next Steve Jobs… or is it Wozniak? There are stereotypes abound: from the quiet, nerdy tech workers to brogrammers to the eccentric CEO complete with his own spiritual advisor. The characters may seem a bit over-the-top to the uninformed, but for those of us who live and breathe Silicon Valley, it’s really not far off.So is the show any good?We watched the first episode here at LMGPR and found Silicon Valley to be funny, clever, intriguing and even inspiring. In the first episode, we meet our protagonists, a group of tech workers, some of whom work for a fictional tech heavyweight company by day, while following their own tech dreams living and working in a home that doubles as an incubator by night. Richard, our hero, is painfully shy and awkward, but is also brilliant and on the cusp of greatness having invented a game changing compression algorithm within an otherwise useless website.
When a bidding war breaks out for his creation, he is faced with selling his invention for a big payday or starting his own company with his housemates and investor support. You’ll have to watch the episode to see his decision…In true Mike Judge style, the banter is quick, witty and, sometimes, crass. We guarantee you won’t be lining up to try “Liquid Shrimp” anytime soon! That being said, one episode in and we at LMGPR are hooked! The Silicon Valley inside jokes may hit a little close to home for some, but if you can’t laugh at yourself, who CAN you laugh at? To watch the first episode of Silicon Valley, click here.
